The Canoe River Cleaner

Find out how one member of Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust is cleaning up his local rivers!

From otters to freshwater shrimps, all animals need an abundant and reliable supply of clean water. Unfortunately, our rivers are victim to huge amounts of pollution which can mean the animals and plants that rely on them, struggle to survive.

But don't worry! There are things we can do to help protect our rivers. We spoke to Jim, aka The Canoe River Cleaner who told us all about the work he’s doing for rivers in his local area!

Hi Jim! Can you introduce yourself?

Hi, my name is Jim (The Canoe River Cleaner) and I’m a proud member of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.

What kickstarted your passion to protect rivers?

At the start of the pandemic, I bought an open-top Canadian style canoe with the intention of enjoying the peace and tranquillity of our local rivers. It was during this time that I was also litter picking on the bank of the River Freshney, which runs through our town centre in Grimsby. I was shocked and dismayed by the amount of rubbish in the river margins. It was then I knew I had to do something about it, and The Canoe River Cleaner was born.

I safely and efficiently clean our local river. This river in particular starts its life further towards its source as a rare and precious chalk stream!

Why is it so important that we look after our rivers?

It is not only vital to make our rivers look nice for the community to enjoy, but we also must remove harmful waste. This waste can alter and disrupt the habitat of our wildlife. Litter in rivers causes a decrease in light levels and a decrease in oxygen levels. This can have an extremely negative effect on invertebrates, fish, and eventually our apex predators such as otters.

It is also worth noting that most rivers feed our oceans and it is well known that polluted rivers have had a harmful effect on our marine life. It makes it all the more important to keep these feeder rivers clean.

How would you encourage others to take action for the planet in their local area?

If you wish to help your environment and bring about real change then choose a small area you can manage and do it often. Remember that education is often born from inspiration so share what you do with others and be proud to be making a difference!
