Make a Star Wars Inspired Bird Feeder

The new Star Wars film blasted onto our cinema screens a short time ago and introduced us to a host of new characters as well as some old favourites. Did you see it? I LOVED it and it's inspired me to create a Star Wars themed bird feeders! Give it a go yourself, not only will it look awesome but you'll be helping the birds too.

Getting Started - Materials

I try to use recycled material wherever possible for my projects, but these items may be a little trickier to find than usual.

Here's what you'll need:

  • A plastic cocktail bowl (for the main body)
  • 2x lightweight foamex sheets
  • 2x yoghurt pots
  • A can of grey spray paint
  • Black acrylic paint
  • String
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Craft knife
  • Glue

Cut out the wings.
Mark out the hexagonal shape of the wings on the foamex sheet with a pencil and ruler and carefully cut them out using a craft knife.
Glue it all together
Glue the base of a yoghurt put to the centre of each wing. Next glue the other end of each yoghurt pot to the main body of the plastic cocktail bowl. make sure the large opening of the cocktail bowl is perpendicular to the ground once finished to make sure the bird seed doesn't fall out when you fill it. Let the glue dry.
 Paint the Tie Fighter
Now it's time to paint your new feeder. You could paint it so it looks the same as in the movie or you could get really creative and come up with your own design! Don't forget to use your grey spray paint to spray inside the feeder too.
The Finished Feeder!
And here is the finished Tie Fighter hanging up to dry.  The large opening at the rear is where the birds can access the seed. I also used some strong cord (it was actually cord form an old crabbing line I had laying around) to create two hanging loops. This will stop the final feeder swinging around too much in the wind!
