About: A small, narrow bodied dragonfly, only about 4.5cm long. The male is black with dark yellow spots along the sides, females and immatures are brownish yellow. On the wing from the end of June until September. This is a common dragonfly of moorlands, heaths and bogs.
How to identify: The only small dragonfly that is almost entirely black.
Where: Found in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, northern England and on heaths in southern England.
