Identifying our samples

Trying to work out what we'd found with the FSC rock guides and hand lenses.

The rock creatures

This is our rock creature family!

The rock hunt!

We had a lovely sunny day for our rock hunt on the 19th February - found loads of interesting samples and then had a go at identifying them with hand lens, rock guides and the vinegar fizz test (for limestone). We also made a rock creature to take home (complete with googly eyes and feather hair style) and played the 'quarry card game' (as Brockholes used to be a working quarry). Thanks to everyone who came.
Next month it's 'Tracks and Trails' on March 11th (2 - 4pm) so come and test out your detective skills!

Bird watching on a cold and frosty afternoon

On Sunday (15th January) it was our 1st proper WATCH club so everyone had to sign in and do all the paperwork. 6 children came and the session went really well so hopefully more people will come next month. We did a bit of bird-watching and made bird feeders. Everyone enjoyed getting messy with the lard and bird seed!
Next month we're exploring the geology of Brockholes so we're doing a rock hunt to see how many different types we can find. Hope to see you there!

Brockholes new WATCH group launches

On the 18th December we held our first Brockholes WATCH group as a drop-in session. We'd gathered lots of materials to make Christmas wreaths and hobby reindeer from old socks. Loads of people turned up (54 children and 50 adults!) over the 2 hours so it was very busy. Towards the end we even ran out of socks so a few people had to use their own!
People made some amazing and beautiful creations and we all enjoyed the session. Hopefully we'll get lots of people coming back in January to do a bit of bird watching - one of the things Brockholes is famous for.
