How to identify: Most easily recognised by the combination of the smooth grey, 'twisting' trunks, the toothed-edged leaves and the three-lobed seeds.
Where: Native in south east England, frequently planted elsewhere.
Fantastic fact: Hornbeam seeds are a favourite food for the elusive Hawfinch during the winter.
