What are nature stars?

About: Water-loving and found mainly at the edges of waterways, fens and wet woods. Often mingled amongth other reedbed plants. Flowers between May and July.

How to identify: Tall reed stems, sometimes branched, with long pointed leaves that may droop over at the ends. Th large yellow flower petals fold back on themselvesand hang down on the outer edges.

Where: Very common across all of the UK and Ireland.

Fantastic fact: A favourite with gardeners, the iris has become a problem in some areas where it has escaped and spread from cultivated varieties.
