Worms at work

Watch worms at work by building this simple wormery.

Layer soil, sand, leaves and compost in a large, clear, plastic bottle with the top cut off and holes punched in the sides. Add a little water and a few worms from your compost heap or garden.

Cover the top with thin material fixed with a rubber band (to stop the worms escaping). Put the wormery somewhere dark and check it daily.

The worms should mix up the layers as they feed and move about - just like they do in a compost heap! Return the worms to where they came from after a few days.
