About: A small fish, up to 10cm long. Sometimes gathers in large shoals. Found in streams and rivers, less commonly in lakes. Feeds on invertebrates and fish eggs.
How to identify: A small fish, brown and greenish barred above with a silvery belly. The male's belly turns pink in the summer, but lacks the spines of sticklebacks.
Where: Found throughout the country.
