Make a bottle basking shark

Make a model basking shark from an old plastic bottle.

You will need:

  • An empty two litre or five litre bottle
  • Sticky tape
  • Coloured carrier bags
  • Coloured sticky-back plastic
  • Permanent markers
  • Scissors
  • A thin cane

What to do:

1. Wash out the bottle
2. Cut the ends off and trim to make the head (be careful - you may need help from an adult)
3. Cut plastic bags into strips of assorted lengths and colours.  Tape the strips to the back of the shark’s head.
4. Use a ring of plastic strips stuck to both the inside and the outside of the bottle to give a fuller, thicker effect than a single layer.
5. Draw the eyes and gill slits onto the shark and colour or decorate with pens and sticky-backed plastic. You could even hang tiny plankton on fishing line from the roof of the shark’s mouth!
6. Make a hole through the top and bottom of the shark’s had (be careful-you may need help from an adult).  Poke a cane through and tape it securely in place.
7. Alternatively use waterproof tape, put the cane on top of the head and swim it in the bath.

Now your shark can swim, wiggle and dance!
