NEWS ALERT: Rare Heron at Attenborough Nature Reserve.

We are excited that a rare heron is visiting our Attenborough Nature Reserve.
 
The squacco heron was first spotted on Friday (28th October), on the bank of the River Erewash, which flows through the reserve, remaining over the weekend and still being sighted again onTuesday 1st November.
 
The unusual bird has attracted hundreds of birdwatchers - many travelling across the country from as far away as Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds. The squacco heron usually breeds in the Mediterranean and Middle East, and then spends its winters in Africa.
 
This is only the fourth time that it has been seen in Nottinghamshire, with previous recorded sightings in 1871 and 1944. A squacco heron was also spotted at Attenborough Nature Reserve back in 1998.

About Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust

We care for over 70 nature reserves across the county, including a mixture of valuable wildlife habitats ranging from beautiful wildflower meadows to splendid ancient woodlands. We engage the local community through events, education and volunteering opportunities and seek to ensure our county is a healthy and wildlife rich place to live.



Working with schools and local communities

We have an extensive education and community programme which promotes learning for life. Much of our work with schools takes place on our nature reserves, and we have dedicated facilities at three main venues in the County: Attenborough Nature Centre, in the south, and The Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre and Cottam Environmental Education Centre (in partnership with EDF Energy) in north Nottinghamshire.


We also deliver sessions in schools and can advise schools on improving their grounds for wildlife, play and study. We are very keen to link schools with nature reserves in their vicinity. Our experienced education team delivers a formal education programme encompassing all age groups. We also provide adult training and teacher inset days.
