About: A fairly large butterfly, rich reddish brown in colour with large blue and yellow peacock 'eyes' on each upper wing, very dark underwings. Wingspan of about 6.5 cm. Adults fly throughout the year in several broods, overwintering as adults. A very common butterfly. They are common visitors to gardens where they feed on buddleia and other flowers. Caterpillars feed on Stinging Nettles.
How to identify: Unmistakeable, perhaps the most familiar butterfly.
Where: Found right across the country, although less common in northern Scotland.

Fantastic fact: When alarmed, the Peacock is able to make a hissing noise by rubbish its wings quickly together to scare off predators.
