About: Common and widespread to the point of being ubiquitous in any grassy area, if there is a grasshopper in your garden it’s almost certainly this one!
How to identify: Usually mottled brown in colour, the field grasshopper is easily identified if seen up close by the 'hairy chest' of fine hairs on the underside of the thorax. Its song is a dry, variable 'zip' repeated at intervals of about one second.
Where: Widespread.
