About: A large hawker-type dragonfly, about 10 cm long. Entirely brown, but for tiny yellow and blue spots along the body and two pale yellow stripes on the thorax. The wings are golden orange in colour. On the wing from the end of June through to September. A common dragonfly of canals, marshes and reedbeds as well as lakes and gravel pits.
How to identify: The only large brown dragonfly with coloured wings.
Where: Much of England, Northern Ireland and parts of Wales.
