About: A small blue damselfly, about 6 cm long. Pale blue with bands of black along the body. A very common damsefly, found around most water bodies and can also be found away from breeding sites in grassland and woodland. On the wing from the end of May through to August.
How to identify: To identify the small blue damselflies, of which there are seven species in Britain, you should concentrate on the pattern on the first segment of the body on the males, just behind the thorax. In Azure Damselfly, this segment is blue with a black U-shape.
Where: Widespread, but absent from northern Scotland.

Fantastic fact: One of the commonest damselflies in Europe, found right the way from Scandinavia to North Africa.
