What are nature stars?

About: A very rough, jagged snail-like shell, up to 5cm long. Oyster Drills are whelks, living below the low tide mark where it feeds on oysters by boring through their shells with its sharp proboscis.

How to identify: Whelks are more pointed than periwinkles. The Oyster Drill is unmistakeable, being much rougher and more jagged in outline than any others.

Where: Found on rocky shores all round our coasts, less common in the east.
