About: A medium sized fish, about 30-40cm long. A member of the Carp family, with the typical carp shape. A bottom-feeding fish that feeds on worms, snails and pea mussels. Lives in large ponds, lakes and slow-moving rivers, where it lives in quite large groups.
How to identify: A deep-bodied fish, silvery with dark brown fins and a deeply forked tail
Where: Found throughout the lowlands, widespread in England but rarer in Wales and Scotland.
