About: A small, chunky plover, about 18cm long. Sandy brown above, white below with a black chest band and black bridle markings on the head. Nests on bare gravel around gravel pits and reservoirs. A resident.
How to identify: Larger and chunkier than the Little Ringed Plover, with an orange bill with a black tip, orange legs and no yellow ring around the eye. When it flies, has a broad white wingbar.
Where: A common resident right around the coast, also found on gravel pits and reservoirs inland.

Fantastic fact: Ringed Plovers that nest as far away as Greenland fly through the UK on migration.
