How to catch minibeasts for a closer look

Make a beating tray, a tumble trap and leaf litter funnel to capture minibeasts for a close up view

 

 

you will need

 

either

 

  • a white sheet & long pole or cane (To make a beating tray)
  • 2 yoghurt pots, bait (small piece of meat or fruit), small stones, large flat stone or tile and a trowel (To make a tumble trap)
  • a cardboard box, large jar, plastic funnel, an angle poise lamp, flat stone (To make a leaf litter funnel)

 

or all of them depending on how many different traps you want to make.  Our activity sheet gives more details.

    I like minibeasts,and I thought of an ant trap.Basically,you do the same as a tumble trap,but make sure a bit of yogurt is in the pot.This will really attract ants because they are sugar crazy.
